About the Conference

Between 1972 and 2019, Bangladesh raised its dollar per capita income eightfold, reduced poverty by more than third, increased life expectancy by more than 47 percent, and enhanced gross primary school enrolment by over 80 percent. These remarkable development achievements came up favorable with outcomes in less developing countries. This progress, fighting against frequent natural calamities and poor governance in general, is a testimony to the resilience and determination of a dynamic young nation, which stimulates the hope that with continued determined efforts Bangladesh can look forward to further gains in development.

Along with this focus on growth, effort must also continue to ensure that the benefits of growth are more widely shared. While Bangladesh has done well in raising per capita income and improving human development, measured against comparable per capita income countries, its long-term performance regarding poverty reduction is relatively weaker.

What policy and institutional reform challenges are there for higher growth rates? What additional reforms are needed to increase the impact of growth on poverty? The answers to these questions require analyzing and understanding the past development performance to look at what worked and what did not work and why. The objective of this conference is to contribute to these analyses and understanding of policies and institutions in Bangladesh.
